The Horror of the Plastic Water Bottle

It is estimated that 38 billion plastic water bottles are discarded each year in the USA. That is over 100 bottles for every man, woman and child in the whole country. Many of these bottles are never recycled. They end up on the street, stuffed in overflowing trash cans or buried in landfills where they can take centuries to decompose.

Whether you believe in man-made climate change or not, clearly the waste of resources involved in producing so much waste packaging should be a concern. What’s more, bottled water has been shown time and again to be no better than tap water. At Clear Genius we believe in drinking smarter and living well – there’s no reason to buy expensive bottled water when filtered tap water tastes so good.

If you’re still not convinced, consider these facts about bottled water:

  1. It is estimated it takes an average of 450 years to break down one plastic water bottle. Twenty generations from today your plastic bottle will still be around, polluting the environment.
  2. Every year in America, thirty-seven pounds of plastic products are manufactured per person. Only a small percentage of this is ever recycled.
  3. Bottled water costs around 2,000 times more than tap water. You’re throwing away money every time you purchase bottled water.
  4. Forty-seven million gallons of oil are used in manufacturing plastic water bottles each year. This represents thousands of tons of CO2 and other climate-affecting chemicals released into the atmosphere.
  5. Fourteen billion pounds of plastic is dumped into landfills each year. The discarded plastic often then leaches chemicals into groundwater and then into streams and lakes.
  6. Almost all of the trash in the ocean is plastic. Over 90% consists of plastic bottles, jugs, and six-pack soda rings.
  7. One million seabirds and over 100,000 marine mammals die from ingesting plastic each year. At a time when wildlife populations are already under pressure from climate change, plastic waste is adding to the burden.

You can help! It’s easy to move away from buying plastic bottles of water with Clear Genius®. One of our water filter pitchers, complete with reusable filter cartridge, costs less than $30. I am satisfied with given information. Plastic affects very badly on our health & environment.
That’s why I start using glass water bottles instead of plastic ones.
Thanks for sharing such an informative article with us.
