It’s incredibly important to us. It’s at the center of all life on Earth. So it makes sense that it should be at the center of our efforts toward sustainability and preserving the environment.
When Roy Mayo’s son was leaving for college, he wanted to make sure that he set him up with everything he would need to be successful – including a water filter pitcher. After all, even mild dehydration can have negative effects on mood and ability to think, and Roy knew that having easy access to fresh, clean water would make it much more likely that his son would remember to stay hydrated.
But there was one problem. All of the options on the shelf used essentially the same filtering system – one that resulted in a huge hunk of plastic going into the trash every other month. After a bit of quick math, Roy realized that with 10 million households in the US, there could be as many as 60 million of these plastic filter cartridges going into landfills each year.
There had to be a better way. So Roy decided to create one: Clear Genius.
The first Earth Day was held on April 22, 1970. Like Clear Genius, it was a small idea – taking a stand against pollution – that had a big impact. The Environmental Protection Agency was created just months later, with a mandate to protect American people, animals, and lands from environmental harm.
Nearly 50 years later, Earth Day is as important as ever. It has become a global event that the Earth Day Network calls “the largest civic-focused day of action in the world”. This year’s theme is particularly relevant: End Plastic Pollution. It’s a mission that resonates strongly with the Clear Genius team. After all, every time a household switches from disposable water bottles to a Clear Genius pitcher, they prevent up to 1800 water bottles from going into a landfill each year – and save nearly $1400, too.
Clear Genius was founded on a simple idea: “What if you didn’t have to throw away the big plastic cartridge in order to have fresh, clean water available at a moment’s notice?” This year, as with every year, we’re proud to support the mission of the Earth Day Network. We hope you’ll join us in our efforts to end plastic pollution and to preserve the environment for our children and our grandchildren.
